The ideal amount of CLIL in a lesson should strike a balance between providing sufficient content knowledge while also allowing for meaningful language practice and development. It is important to keep in mind that CLIL is not just about using a foreign language as a medium of instruction; it should involve active engagement with the content and language simultaneously.
In order to assess the extent of Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) happening in your class, you need to take into consideration various factors such as:
Language Use:
Is the target language integrated into content instruction, discussions, and pupils interactions? Are pupils encouraged to use the target language to express their ideas, ask questions, and engage in activities related to the content?
Content Integration:
Are content and language objectives integrated into lesson plans? Are pupilss exposed to subject-specific vocabulary and concepts in the target language? Do they have opportunities to apply their language skills in meaningful ways while learning content?
Materials and Resources:
Are there textbooks, articles, videos, or other instructional materials that incorporate both content and language learning? Do you provide supplementary materials that support CLIL, such as bilingual dictionaries or subject-specific vocabulary lists?
Assessment Methods:
Do your assessments include tasks that require pupils to demonstrate understanding of both content and language? Are they expected to write, speak, or present information in the target language as part of their assessments?
Teacher Training and Collaboration:
Have you received any specific training on integrating content and language in your teaching? Do you collaborate with other teachers who can provide support and share best practices for CLIL implementation?
