Scaffolding Learning in CLIL Produce Own Idea

     Some extra ideas regarding scaffolding in a primary CLIL classroom

  1. Think-Pair-Share: Give a topic to the students related to the students. Give students time to think individually. Have them to discuss their ideas with a partner. Ask some pairs to share their thoughts with the whole class, providing scaffolding support if needed.
  2. Sentence Frames and Starters: Offer half of the sentence’s beginning or ending and let them find the rest. Gradually remove more and more sentence frames as students become more proficient.
  3. Guided Reading: Select texts related to the content and provide guided reading activities. Create comprehension questions, highlight key vocabulary and model reading strategies. Support students by providing targeted questions and prompts.
  4. Peer tutoring: Match more proficient will less proficient students. Monitor the process.
  5. Engage students to hands on experiments referring to CLIL content areas. Explain instructions clearly, be present and monitor the whole process.
  6. Use as much as “interactive technology” as possible and allow some self-access to these materials. The visual and auditory support that these materials can provide can be a great support for students with learning difficulties.

Model and Think Aloud: Explicitly model the thought process and language use when solving problems, analyzing texts, or completing tasks. Think aloud, verbalize your reasoning and demonstrate how to apply language and content knowledge effectively. This can be a great help to students for their own thinking and language production
